Virtual PBX® announces free softphone apps for iphone and android

Apps include audio compression for higher quality calls on 3G and 4G networks

SAN JOSE, CALIF. (April 9, 2013) – VirtualPBX, the pioneer and leader in hosted PBX phone systems, today announced new softphone applications for the iPhone and Android markets. These new apps allow Virtual PBX clients to turn their mobile phones into VoIP handsets that integrate fully into the company’s business VoIP systems.

The new apps include a variety of capabilities that go beyond the norm for softphone applications. Often, softphones require Wi-Fi connectivity in order to get the bandwidth needed for static-free voice transmission. The new Virtual PBX apps include G729 compression codecs, so users can enjoy higher quality phone calls even on 3G and 4G networks. This codec is sometimes available for competing softphones, but usually involves extra cost. The compression capability is standard for both Virtual PBX softphone apps at no charge.

The new softphones also offer enhanced security. Virtual PBX’s unique provisioning platform goes beyond what is provided by other vendors in protecting clients from fraud.

“We’re excited to respond to client demand with these new softphone apps,” said Paul Hammond, CEO of Virtual PBX. “Fully integrated into our systems, these softphones give clients a single point of contact for all their business phone system needs.”

By using the Virtual PBX softphone apps, clients can receive and make calls on their cellular phones that go through the Virtual PBX system, adding features and reducing costs when compared to normal cellular calls. For example, calls made from a mobile phone usually include the user’s personal Caller ID, while calls made through the softphone app will allow clients to send their company phone number in the Caller ID field, protecting their private cellular numbers. Other features that can be accessed through the system include call recording, centralized voice and fax messaging, and real-time call monitoring and reporting. In addition, calls are sent on the mobile phone’s data network, often making the calls free of charge to the user.

The new softphone apps have been designed to be easy to use. Added to the rest of Virtual PBX’s offerings, clients can now get everything from just one vendor – a virtual phone system, VoIP capability, desk phones, cordless phones, and now softphones. The company will also continue to support SIP-standard VoIP hard phones and softphones from other vendors.

The softphone app for the Android platform is available now from Google’s app store, and the Apple iPhone version has been submitted for release and should be available soon. Both apps will be free.
