Recommended Routers

While we'll make sure your phone calls go through our system correctly, you'll want to make sure your network can support VoIP traffic and keep your network within needed limits for jitter, latency, and packet loss. A good first check of your network can be done using our VoIP Test.
Virtual PBX supports industry-standard Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) for communication with VoIP phones. We have no specialized requirements and no proprietary communication needs. In addition, phones purchased from Virtual PBX are pre-configured, or "plug and play". Most of our clients simply plug phones into their Internet connection and they work instantly.
If you do have trouble with your network, the problem may be with your choice of network router. We’ve found some routers work better with SIP traffic and VoIP calls than others. A list of our recommended routers is shown below:
Apple Airport Extreme

This router includes both wired and wireless connectivity. It has a single Ethernet WAN port for connecting to a DSL or cable modem, 3 Ethernet LAN ports for connecting network devices. This router is the best choice for people who want complete ease of use and 100% compatibility out of the box. It does not support QOS. Features and specs can be found on Apple's website.

Netgear WNDR4500

This Netgear router also supports both wired and wireless connections. The router has 4 LAN ports for connecting devices plus one WAN port to connect to DSL or cable. This router is a great choice if you need advanced functionality like QoS and stateful pack inspection. A product overview and technical specs can be found at Netgear.

Other routers

Based on customer feedback and experience we know the above routers work well. As part of our award-winning open systems initiative, our phones will work with a wide variety of other routers, as well. If you are in a position to choose, however, we know these will work for you based on the success of other clients.
